The
green revolution has led to changes in the irrigation system, the
existence of the new rice varieties and new methods, farmers must plant
rice as often as possible, ignoring the needs of the other farmers. This is very different from Subak system, in which the needs of all farmers preferred. A
new method on the green revolution yields rich results at first, but
then followed by constraints such as shortage of water, pest and
pollution due to pesticides either on the ground or in the water. Eventually it was discovered that paddy irrigation system traditionally it is effective to overcome this obstacle.
Subak
had been studied by Clifford Geertz, while j. Stephen Lansing has
attracted the attention of the public on the importance of the
traditional irrigation system. He studied the temples in Bali, especially for agriculture, commonly overlooked by foreigners. In 1987 Lansing worked with farmers to develop computer models of Bali Subak irrigation system. With that he prove the effectiveness of this system and the importance of Water.
